Top 10 Wedding Gatecrash Games for 2014
The origin of gatecrash games came from ancient Chinese customs where the noisy fun was said to frighten off any evil spirits and a form of well wishes for the Bride and Groom. The Groom has to complete a series of challenges before fetching the Bride and it is believed that the tradition symbolises the reluctance to marry off the Bride because of the family’s deep love for her. Upon crossing the necessary hurdles through the gatecrash games and the Groom proving his love for the Bride, only then would the Groom be permitted to fetch the Bride.  In modern day, the gatecrash games are normally prepared by the Bridesmaids. The groomsmen are allowed to participate in the games to help the Groom succeed in fetching the Bride.
To facilitate the bridesmaid in the preparation of gatecrash games, we have compiled a list of Top 10 Gatecrash Games for consideration.
1) 酸甜苦辣 (Sour, Sweet, Bitter and Spicy)
Frequently featured in many weddings, the significance of concocting four diverse flavours aimed to tickle the tastebuds of the groomsmen denotes the different emotions the couple has to go through in their marriage life. We would also exercise caution not to go overboard in the flavour profiles – the last thing we want is a tummy upset for the Groom on his big day!
Sweet: Honey, Condensed Milk , Chocolate, Sweets, Sugar
Sour: Lemon Juice/Lemon Slices, Lime, Vinegar
Bitter: Raw bitter gourd, Bitter Tea
Spicy: Wasabi, Sambal, Chilli Sauce
2) Forming “I Love You†with Food
Toast bread slices in advance and let the groomsmen eat the bread to form individual letters “I Love You†or any special message to the bride.
Other than using toasted bread, biscuits or buns can also achieve the same effect.
Â
3) The Love Contract
Ask the Groom to express his love by penning it down a Love Contract that he will abide to during his marriage life.
The Groom can read out the contract before entering the room to get approval to be allowed access.
4) Getting to know the Bride
The purpose of the game is to test how much the Groom knows about his Bride and will be entertaining for everyone to participate. Prepare in advance close up shots of the Bride (e.g. Eyes, Hands, Ear). The bridesmaids can add in random photos of themselves in similar close-up shots and stick them onto posters to ask the Groom to guess which photos feature his Bride.
You may also add in questions such as “What is her favourite flower?â€, “How did they first meet?â€
For every wrong answer to the question, there will be a forfeit.
5) Sing to my Love
Does the couple have a favourite love song? Ask the Groom to showcase his vocals and engage the Groomsmen by asking them to be backup dancers or act accordingly to the lyrics of the song.
6) Dance Dance Revolution
Bitten by the Korean Craze? Pick one dance routine for the Groomsmen to imitate.
7) Minute To Win It
Take inspiration from the popular show “Minute To Win It†and add in some of the games that needs to be completed in
60 seconds.
You could adapt some of the games to make it more relevant for the Gatecrash. Â Failure to complete the tasks in 60 seconds would result in forfeit.
Our favourite games include:
- Mad Dog
Two boxes of tic tacs are attached to opposite sides of a ruler. Hold ruler in mouth and shake your head like a mad dog until all tic tacs are out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5uvTHo9bRU)
- Face the Cookie
Players must move a cookie from their forehead to their mouths using only their faces in under a minute.

8) A Love Message
Prepare a bowl filled with red/green/black beans – to increase difficulty add in more green or other coloured beans. Pass chopsticks and ask the Groom and his brothers to choose only red beans to form a message to the Bride. Provide some paper and glue and the end masterpiece can be framed up as a sweet memory.
9)Â The KEY to happiness
Instead of handing the key over to the Groom, why not incorporate a game so that they can find the key?
Here are a few variations for consideration:
- Place the key into a lockbox with a combination lock. The code should be decided by the Bride in advance such as their wedding date or any significant date that is meaningful to them.
- Prepare a bucket filled with ice cubes and a few metal objects such as spoons, different sets of keys (to increase difficulty). Remember to cover the top of the bucket with crepe paper and create an opening in the middle sufficient to place a hand into it.
- Freeze many keys into different blocks of ice and let the Groomsmen brainstorm how to extract the correct key.
10) Show me the Money!
Finishing all the challenges is only half the battle won, rewarding (or bribing) the bridesmaids with an appropriate sum in their Ang Baos might allow the Groom to fetch the bride with ease.
