5 Ways to Save Money on Your Wedding
Let’s face it. Weddings are expensive. Although many of us may pray that the “Ang Baos†will help cover for the wedding costs, we do hear stories every now and then of couples receiving Empty Red Packets (Shocking! We hope the person forgot rather than do it intentionally), last minute guests that decide not to attend the wedding dinner (Emergencies are forgiven) and the list goes on.
In Singaporean culture, most couples face multiple milestones within a close timeline i.e planning for Wedding, renovating for new home, deciding a honeymoon destination etc. Thus, we compiled a list of ways to help save money for your wedding day to help ease your finances.
1) Deciding on the overall Wedding Budget
First things first. Many couples rush into the nitty gritty of wedding planning (Booking a Wedding Date, Securing a banquet, Deciding on a Bridal Boutique etc) rather than taking a step back to discuss what they could really afford. Coming up with a budget that you and your partner are willing to spend is important and really should be the first thing to do before being overwhelmed by other details of the wedding.
With an overall budget in mind, it helps eases and allocates your money to the different wedding vendors. That being said, it also curbs unnecessary overspending.
2) Location, Location, Location
Most Singaporean couples would depend on the red packets received to help cover the wedding venue cost which normally takes up a huge chunk of the wedding budget. Be practical. If you are dreaming of a wedding venue that is not within your means, do not expect your guests to pay exorbitantly for their red packets and set aside additional funds to top up the difference.
Creatively planning for a non-traditional wedding venue without breaking the bank could also be a fun experience not only for the couple and also the wedding guests. Â Check out the following links for ideas of interesting wedding venues in Singapore.

3) Leveraging on Talented Friends
Do you know of any friends that fit into these categories?
- Loves Music and have their own band
- Freelance Photographers
- Has a creative eye for floral arrangements and reception table
- Speaks eloquently in large audiences
Look within your existing friends and see if possible to engage their services for a discounted rate. Depending on the type of services, some would even offer their help for free given their friendship with you.
4) Using Credit Cards to your Advantage
Do you prefer Cash Back, Air Miles, Reward Points? With the wide selection of credit cards with different features, using the right credit cards to charge to your wedding expenses can bring you some cost savings and perhaps free honeymoon tickets!
5) Bridesmaid Dresses
Over the years, it is a trend that bridal parties are getting bigger in numbers. Increasingly, most brides are picking up the tab for the cost of the bridesmaid dresses in order to show appreciation for her ladies.
Before we founded The BMD Shop, due to lack of choices of suitable and affordable bridesmaid dresses during our wedding planning, my bridesmaids and I succumbed to expensive made-to-measure bridesmaid dresses.  Now, shopping for bridesmaid dresses is a breeze on our website (www.thebmdshop.com) and we aim to be every bride’s best friend by providing a selection of exquisite bridesmaid dresses to fit your wedding theme.Â
